Battery Dodd

This battery of two 4.7-inch Armstrong quick-firing guns was originally located on the old fort next to Battery Torbert. Built in 1898 only as a temporary position, the guns were later moved to a permanent position outside the fort. The permanent battery was named for Colonel (brevet Brig. Gen.) Levi A. Dodd, who commanded a Pennsylvania volunteer regiment during the Civil War. He left the service in 1865 and died in 1901. The guns and pedestal mounts were removed by 1921.
